Oh, you crazy Serbians.

A Serbian folk song about Dukljan says that he once removed the Sun from the sky and brought it to the Earth. Saint John managed to trick him and restore the Sun, but afterwards, while chasing him, Dukljan grabbed at him and tore a piece of flesh from John’s foot, which explains why humans have arches of the foot.

day 3 of no cigarettes

now on day 3 of wearing a nicotine patch- although the physical symptoms i’ve experienced trying to give up in the past are gone (like cold sweats, shaking)- the moodswings, anxiety, and strange as it might sound, cravings for the taste/feel of a cigarette are not.

my appetite is also a lot larger.   i do not remember this from the other times.

soup

this week, i have been mostly eating soup with those partially cooked baguettes you finish in the oven.

i have also burned the roof of my mouth on it every day so far. :|

today, it is potato and leek soup, to which i have added cheese and finely chopped ham.

serves 2

  • 300g smoked bacon (chopped medium-fine)
  • 350g new potatoes (cooked, chopped into halves)
  • 400g savoy cabbage (chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ~1 clove garlic (pureéd/mashed)
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon mustard powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground coriander seeds
  • salt & black pepper

in a wok, fry over a medium-high heat until lightly browned, then reduce heat to lowest setting, cover, and let cook for about 10 minutes to allow fat to render.   reserve in a bowl, keeping fat in the pan.

fry potato in bacon fat over medium-high heat until golden, and set aside with bacon.

add butter and garlic.   toss in cabbage and stir until well coated.   add remaining ingredients, including reserved potatoes/bacon.   fold until well mixed, cover, reduce heat to lowest setting, and leave to cook until cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally.

serve.
